Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I declare the Leadership Studies Minor?
A: The minor is coordinated through the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES); however, you will declare the minor through your home college. The process for declaring a minor varies by college. For CFAES this is done through filling out the Major/Minor/Advisor Declaration Form. If you are a student in another college, please check your college’s website and/or ask your academic advisor to learn about the correct process.
Q: When should I complete the capstone project?
A: Completing the capstone is dependent on your semester course load and development of a project idea. Reflection on leadership concepts is part of the capstone course; therefore, some foundational knowledge is beneficial before beginning a project.
Q: When should I know what I want to do for a capstone project?
A: You should have a well-developed idea BEFORE the beginning of the semester in which you are taking a capstone course. Many projects require communication and collaboration with others which takes time. Students who wait until the semester starts to propose a project tend to not be as successful as those that are ready to begin. Contact the instructor for the capstone course you are taking to discuss ideas and coordinate your enrollment in the class.
Q: What are potential capstone projects?
A: Capstone projects can look differently depending on the student’s major, interests, and their involvement with groups and organizations. See the Capstone page for project examples.
Q: What if a course that counts toward the minor is not offered in the semester that I need it?
A: It is your responsibility to plan out your program. Use the OSU course search to find when courses are offered in advance of registration.
Q: Can I substitute a course not listed in the minor requirements to fulfill a category?
A: There are a few courses already approved as substitutions that are listed below. Other substitutions will only be considered if arranged with the Leadership Studies Minor Coordinator before taking the course. Work with your academic advisor to get the course to show in your degree audit. Contact the Leadership Studies Minor Coordinator if their written authorization is required.
